Over 50% of the drugs imported from Canadian Pharmacies recent studies show DO NOT come from Canada. Even in the United States much of prescription drugs are originating in China (or India) were standards are non existent or minimal. Almost NO checking by any governmental agency on arrival in US.

Therefore, getting your prescriptions filled anywhere may be becoming labeled "very risky" at best.

We will assume buying from your local "dependable" drug store continues to likely be your best bet. Therefore we are concentrating our information primarily on that source, and not suggesting you expand what is already "risky".
To understand how you can save and how much you can save we start with some basic figures.
The average monthly cost (2006) for a generic drug prescription was$28.74, according to the National Association of Chain Drug Stores. For branded drugs, that figure was $96.01.

This terminology means the Generic drugs are those that a patent has expired and all drug makers can compete making and selling it. The drug is required to be essentially the same as the patented drug was that likely had been selling at a much higher figure by usually just one firm.

You need to know that just because the drug is available as a Generic, and you know good old Charley, your friendly local pharmacist will give you the cheapest available because he KNOWS you need to save money, is not true.

Charley may want to give you the much better Generic price but he has to fill your prescription with EXACTLY what your Doctor told him to give you in the prescription..

Therefore, even though available as a generic, and your doctor wrote the prescription for the Trade Name of the former patent owners drug,Charley has to fill it with the much higher priced drug.

Therefore, every drug you take and fill, ASK your druggist, is this or equivalent available in Generic? If he says yes, but your doctor has prescribed the Trade Name drug, ask your druggist to call your doctor and get an okay to change it to the Generic.

If no Generic for the drug you are taking ask the pharmacist if there is on equivalent in its job, (what it does) that is a Generic... then ask if he can call and get your prescription changed to the other drug.

You may, in some cases, (unusual) have to call your physician yourself.Explain, you can not afford this high cost drug and understand there are alternatives at much lower cost and you need your prescription changed.

When you have pulled this off, you are almost set to save 70% on your prescription needs. We will show you the rest of the steps...

Generic switch will save you about 70% at best, but there are now some more steps...to check.....

Generic prescriptions still require a prescription. There are two more steps to better prices that you need to know about.

Full availability to buy as an OTC drug.... this means Over The Counter, no prescription needed to buy this.
But most don't know that many drugs now come as lower strength over the counter in a lesser strength, no prescription required version, NO prescription needed saves trip to Doctor for this lesser strength and it is likely cheaper than the prescription generic.
