Example; The Price Difference, For Diabetics, The most popular Diabetic Drug, Glucophage, I just called, Walgreen's, 500mg, 60 tablets, for twice a day, brand name, one months supply $56.99.

It is my understanding that if the doctor prescribed "Glucophage" regardless of what the pharmacy tells you, that they are giving you the lowest price, they can not substitute a generic Metformin version unless the doctor specifically approves the change.

This is why you have to ask either the doctor yourself. to change your prescription or authorize the pharmacist to contact your doctor to ask for approval to change your prescription to the generic version, Metformin.

Metformin, the generic version was $19.99. for 60 tablets when I asked, With your insurance paying $15.00 it would then cost you $5. This is why Walgreens were reported to be telling stockholders that they are not losing a lot of sales to Walmart and Target with the $4 price program, is because the customer is only saving $1 out of pocket with co-pay.

It is obvious the insurance company is the one still taking the hit. The real beneficiary of the new program is the person with no co-pay, and likes the $4. much better then the $19.99.

Editors Note:.... Gougaphage, is a Tradename, and if your doctor writtes that on you prescription and marks it no substitution you are stuck for $56 a month. You should certainly be able to get your doctor to okay a switch to Metformin if your pharmacist calls.
